Ufology is the set of subjects and activities associated with the interest in unidentified flying objects (UFOs). The phenomena O NIV were targets of various investigations over the years by governments, scientists and independent groups. The term Ufology is a neologism, derived from UFO [a term apparently invented by Edward J. Ruppelt, meaning Unidentified Flying Object] pronounced as an acronym, with the suffix-logy, which comes from the ancient Greek λογία (logiā).

The discipline is associated with the study of reports of Unidentified Flying Objects, with the objective of determining whether a certain sighting can be explained by means of a set of atmospheric circumstances, or if it was made by man. The ultimate goal of Ufology is to provide irrefutable evidence for the existence of visits to Earth by beings from other planets, and much of the time is spent in investigating alleged UFO activities, to find out if there is a logical earthly explanation connected to the phenomena.

It is important to recognize that Ufology is not considered a valid science by the majority of the scientific community, but there are a number of scientists with impeccable credentials, in various fields of science, who are involved in UFO research. At the same time, many dedicated ufologists have expertise in different areas outside of science, as in various forms of technology. Although many UFO researchers are slow to accept reports of sightings and other types of contact with a possible race of extraterrestrial origin, there are many people involved in the studies who do not require a large amount of evidence before accepting them as a valid contact.

In addition to the sightings, other phenomena of interest are also related to some fields of ufology, such as crop circles, cattle mutilations and abductions, alien implants, etc. It is worth mentioning that some ufologists also promoted conspiracy theories of UFOs, such as the famous cases of the Roswell incident in 1947, the Majestic documents 12 and the defense of the cause of disclosure of UFOs to the public.
